Abahani Limited registered their fourth successive victory in the Bangladesh Premier League as they managed a 2-0 win over promoted Uttar Baridhara Club in the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Tuesday. With their win, the Sky Blues moved to the top of the table with 16 points from 6 matches. Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club have 13 points from five matches. In the day’s other match, Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra beat Chittagong Abahani 2-0.
Abahani’s Shahedul Alam justified his number 10 jersey with the opening goal in the 12th minute with a left-footed shot following a cutback pass from Nigerian striker Osei Morrison.
After taking the lead, Abahani executed the plan of Iranian coach Ali Akbar, giving no room to speedy Uttar Baridhara, who upset Brothers Union in their last match.
Three minutes after halftime, Ghanaian midfielder Awudu Ibrahim, who scored a brace against Muktijoddha a few days ago, doubled Abahani’s lead with a powerful strike from just outside the box that gave Uttar Baridhara keeper Osman Goni no chance.
Uttar Baridhara worked hard to reduce the deficit, but their best chance came in the 71st minute, when Abahani skipper Sujan’s clearing header hit his own crossbar.
However, Sujan almost immediately rectified his mistake, clearing Nigerian forward Akindele’s close range header off the goal line.
In the day’s second match, Muktijoddha managed their second consecutive win in the league as they thrashed another promoted club, Chittagong Abahani, by a 2-0 margin.
Nigerian marksman Nkwocha Kingsley’s brace took Muktis to fourth place in the table with 10 points from 6 matches.
The Nigerian forward put Muktijoddha ahead in the 21st minute when his header went into the back of the net following a cross from the right flank from Nigerian teammate Elita Kingsley.
Nkwocha scored his fourth in the league this year just four minutes before the end of regulation time after he received a long ball from Rafikur Rahman in the middle of the box and shot the ball in at the near post.
