Abahani Limited posted a comfortable 5-2 victory against Uttar Baridhara in the Bangladesh Premier League at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Wednesday.
Thanks to their biggest win in the ongoing campaign, Abahani raised their tally to 31 points from 15 matches, still six points behind the table-toppers Sheikh Jamal DC.
Baridhara remained stuck in eighth place with 10 points they collected in previous matches.
Shahedul Alam gave Abahani a first minute lead as the midfielder hit the back of the net past Uttar Baridhara keeper after a cut-back from his Cameroonian team-mate Ekele Patrick from the left side.
Nasirul Islam doubled the lead in the 13th minute as the right winger calmly placed the ball into the net from the D-box after receiving a short pass from Awudu Ibrahim.
Portuguese forward Leonildo Suares made the score line 3-0 in the 21st minute after a one-two with Ibrahim.
Ibrahim joined the goal fest in the 55th minute with a solo effort as the Ghanaian midfielder dodged past a
defender to break into the right of the penalty area before sending the ball into the near post.
Abahani keeper Shahidul Alam Sohel produced a stunning save in the 60th minute punching away a powerful strike by Nigerian defender Yakubu Suleiman.
Kenyan striker Collins Tiego pulled one goal back in the 65th minute tapping in a pass off Khalekur Jamen.
Patrick extended the score line in the 81st minute, receiving a through pass from Suares before Dulal Hasan made
it 5-2 in the stoppage time. The substitute forward
put the ball into the empty net after receiving a cut-back from Collins from the left.
In the day’s second match, Brothers Union beat Feni Soccer 2-1 to secure their fourth consecutive victory, leapfrogging Mohammedan SC in the point table.
In-form attacking duo—Augustine Walson and Kester Akon—struck for Brothers in the 16th and 40th minutes before Ali Hasan pulled one goal back in the 61st minute.
Soccer played the last 10 minutes one man short after their goalkeeper Mohammed Nehal was sent off for touching the ball outside the box. Brothers, however, failed to grab the chance to increase the margin.
