A stoppage-time strike by Mithun Chowdhury gave Sheikh Russell KC full three points against Mohammedan Sporting Club in the last match of the second phase of Bangladesh Premier League on Sunday. The match was heading towards a goalless draw before Mithun scored in the dying seconds of five minutes added time. Mohammedan, who dominated the game otherwise, played the last 10 minutes of stipulated time with ten men after their Nigerian midfielder Damien Chigozi was shown a red card.
With the win, Russell ended the second phase in sixth place with 24 points while Mohammedan missed a chance to put their arch-rivals Abahani Limited behind and finished the second phase in third position with 32 points.
Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club are topping the table with 42 points, eight points ahead of second-placed Abahani.
Mohammedan had the first shot on target in the 42nd minute when Wahed Ahmed’s shot from outside the box was brilliantly saved by Russell keeper Biplob.
In the second half, Mohammedan controlled the match most of the time but due to some silly mistakes made by Mohammedan attackers they failed to get the lead.
Towhidul Alam Sabuj wasted the golden chance of the match in the79th minute when he received a ball in front of an empty net from Zahid Hasan Ameli but the striker failed to put the ball into the net.
Russell keeper Biplob Bhattacharya produced a diving save to deny Ameli’s header in the 88th minute following a cross by Sabuj.
Mithun scored his fifth goal of the league as he dodged past a defender before entering the box and chipped the ball over Mohammedan keeper Mamun Khan to seal the victory.
The third phase of the league will start from June 14.
