Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club got off to a flying start in Bhutan’s King’s Cup with a thumping 3-0 win over local side Druk United at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu on Saturday. Their newly recruited Gambian midfielder Landing Darboe, Nigerian forward Wedson Anselme and Rubel Miah each struck a goal as Jamal overcame freezing temperature and extreme height to win.
Jamal coach Maruful Haque opted for an all out attack by playing striking trio of Shakhwat Hossain Rony, Wedson and Darboe upfront.
Darboe made his debut for Jamal with an outstanding set-piece in the 25th minute to give the Bangladesh Premier League champions the lead.
His curling free-kick from the right side went straight into the back of the Druk net.
Wedson, one of the main architects of Jamal’s last year successes, doubled the lead in the 70th minute when he sent the ball home after his Haitian team-mate Vanial Sirin’s effort was ricocheted off .
Substitute forward Rubel Miah, who signed for Jamal recently from Brothers Union, made the scoreline 3-0 in the last minute of the stipulated time.
The young forward found a cross of Wedson from left flank to coolly slot the ball past the rushing keeper.
Last year’s BPL runners-up, Abahani Limited, will open their campaign against Assam Electricity of India today at the same venue.
This will be the first meeting for the sides since 2010 when Abahani beat Electricity 2-1 in the Bordoloi Trophy.
The match will start at 3:00pm Bangladesh time.
