Bangladesh Under-23 football team will be desperate for their first win in the Bangabandhu Gold Cup when they take on SAFF semi-finalists Maldives in Dhaka today.
The SA Games-bound Bangladeshi boys began their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Bahrain Under-23s while the Maldivians are right on top of Group B with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Cambodia in Jessore.
As a result, Gongalo Moreno’s boys are in desperate need of a win to give them a chance to reach the semi-finals.
‘We are positive about tomorrow’s [Thursday’s] game because we don’t have alternatives rather than a win,’ captain Rezaul Karim told reporters on Wednesday.
The hosts also suffered a big blow as their in-form winger Rubel Mia, who was adjudged as the best player in their first match, received a hamstring injury and might miss today’s match.
Meanwhile, Bahrain Under-23 team will face Cambodia in the first match of the day.
