An Australian, arrested on Thursday at Dhaka airport on charge of carrying unendorsed foreign currencies, was sent to jail on Friday on a court order.
The Airport police produced Peter Christofidis in the court seeking him to be remanded in police custody for interrogation but the court sent him to jail. A case was filed earlier.
The court posted the hearing in the case for May 8, court sources said.
The customs authorities arrested Christofidis, scheduled to fly for Thailand by the flight TG-322 of the Thai Airways about 12:30pm on Thursday, as he was carrying Tk 91,93,245 lakh in foreign currencies that were not endorsed.
Christofidis was the business development manager of the Townshend Homes Group, the police said.
The investigation officer, subinspector Rezaul Karim, said that Christofidis had visited Bangladesh at least 10 times in about a year and a half.
He had worked as a regional executive of a consultancy firm related to buying houses and student migration to Australia, Rezaul said.
In Bangladesh, Christofidis visited different places, including Rangpur and Sylhet, and most of the time stayed in Westin Hotel at Gulshan.
‘I sent a letter to the Australian high commission today informing the commission of his arrest and whereabouts,’ Rezaul said on Friday.
