The chief adviser, Fakhruddin Ahmed, Tuesday said the road network in the capital must be expanded to make habitable the mega-city Dhaka where civic life is afflicted with growing traffic congestion, much of which is blamed on cumulative negligence over the years.
The head of the caretaker government stressed the urgency while inaugurating the much-talked-about Bijoy Sarani-Tejgaon east-west connecting road over the ruins of the high-rise Rangs Bhaban reduced to wrecks amid the recent demolition drive against so many unauthorised constructions that blocked arteries of the burgeoning city.
He said his government had started implementation of primary works of mid-and long-term projects under Strategic Transport Plan and hoped that the up-and-coming government would give special attention to this scheme.
He noted that the present government has approved the 15-year STP that focuses constructing east-west roads in the capital, which doesn’t’ t have direct east-west communications — a lacking that is one of the major causes of veritable traffic impasse in the city that gobbles up huge valuable man-hours.
The chief adviser opened the Bijoy Sarani extended road towards the east to link with Tejgaon industrial area by unveiling the inaugural plaque on this auspicious day when the nation celebrated the 37th anniversary of its victory in the 1971 War of Independence.
The Bijoy Sarani-Tejgaon east-west link road would be opened to public traffic from March 26, the national Independence Day, it was informed at the function organised by RAJUK near the Tibet Company’s industry.
This link road construction was delayed for some legal complications and deaths of some labourers in an accident during the demolition of the Rangs Bhaban, the function was also apprised.
The construction of Bijoy Sarani-Tejgaon road link was primarily initiated following the demolition of the high-rise by the present caretaker government following the verdict of the Supreme Court.
The road project, including 1.14-kilometre-long road, 669-metre railway overpass and construction of one underpass, involves a cost over Tk 122 crore funded by the government of Bangladesh.
Housing and public works ministry is the initiator while RAJUK is the implementing agency.
Communications and housing and public works adviser Ghulam Quader also spoke at the inaugural function presided over by secretary of the public works ministry ASM Rashidul Hye.
Advisers, special assistants to chief adviser, government officials and local elite were present.
Later, the chief adviser’s motorcade drove through the new link road.
