Speakers at a seminar on the contemporary film industry in Bangladesh called for taking a holistic measure for the improvement of
each and every sector of the industry for its revival.
Film researcher Fahmidul Hoque in his keynote paper evaluated the industry and analysed the contemporary trend in the seminar titled Samakalin bangladesher chalachitra: probanatar bishleshon ebong mulayan, which was held on Saturday at the seminar room of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy as part of the five-day film festival jointly organised by Moviana Film Society and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Director general of the academy Liaquat Ali Lucky, noted filmmakers Chashi Nazrul Islam, Morshedul Islam and Saidur Anam Tutul on the keynote paper at the seminar presided over by Belayed Hossain Mamun, president of the film society.
Fahmidul Hoque’s keynote paper analysed that the slumped trade of the country’s film industry known as Dhallywood began since 1980s when the viewers preferred watching Hindi and English films in video format and subsequently on Internet to watching local films in the cinemas.
He also blamed violence and vulgarity of the Dhallywood film industry in the 1990s as tow more causes for which the viewers showed their backs to the cinemas.
Hoque in his keynote paper appreciated private TV channels for producing a good number of films. But, he evaluated that the trend could not give any solution to the slumped trade market as these channels air films before releasing those at the cinemas for which the viewers do not get any interest to watch films at the exhibition halls, Hoque analysed.
Hoque also welcomed introduction of the technologies required for making and releasing digital films in the recent years. But, it does not ensure improvement of artistic quality films, he evaluated.
The discussants admitted the arguments Fahmidul Hoque made in his keynote paper. They called for taking holistic measures for the development of the film industry by the government.
They called for introducing a modern film institute for the training of the filmmakers and technicians and improvement of cinemas of the country immediately.
