Tenants’ association asks govt
Jatiya Bharatia Parishad, an association of tenants, yesterday demanded the enforcement of House Rent Control Act, 1991, to prevent the house owners from increasing the rent arbitrarily.
The council also urged to bring an end to the practice of evicting tenants without prior notice.
“Each year house owners increase rent by Tk 5,000 without any reason although tenants pay for the utilities (gas, electricity and water) separately,” alleged Baharane Sultan Bahar, president of Jatiya Bharatia Parishad.
The House RentControl Act, 1991 does not allow the house owner to increase rent if the tenant did not live there for at least two years but the owners seldom follow it, he said at a press conference held at an auditorium of Dhaka Reporters’ Unity.
The council urged the government to implement the house rent chart for each area prepared by the Dhaka City Corporation in 2006. It was revised in 2008.
Bahar announced that on June 6, the council would collect signatures in support of their cause, in front of the Jatiya Press Club from 10:00am to 5:00pm.
Though there is a house rent chart for the capital, it only remains on paper due to lack of execution, he said.
