Congolese striker Siyo Zunapio’s double strike enabled Farashganj Sporting Club to continue their giant-killing act with a 2-0 drubbing of defending champions Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in the Bangladesh Premier League on Monday.
Zunapio scored one apiece in either half to secure the surprise victory for Farashganj who spent most of the season at the bottom of the points table.
The win saw Farashganj jump five places up to sixth after they gathered seven points from their last three matches that
include a goalless draw with Mohammedan SC and a win against second-placed Muktijoddha Sangsad KC.
At the Bangabandhu National Stadium, Zunapio put his team ahead in the 19th minute with a near-post finish from the left corner of the six-yard box from Arafat’s pass.
Farashganj trio Zunapio, Chindo Henry and Arafat forced Jamal to concentrate on defending as the three created frequent opportunities by breaking down Jamal defence.
Zunapio doubled the lead in the 67th minute from Nigerian Henry’s square pass.
Farashganj coach Kamal Babu said they are now a spirited team after their problems with the team management over payment of long overdue salaries were solved when the league went into a break after completion of first phase and this is the key for their success.
‘There were some
problems in our team which has been solved during break after the first leg. Now my players are charged-up and they are always ready to put some extra effort on the field,’ said Kamal.
‘Our target is to finish in the top-four of the league,’ he added.
Farashganj now have 14 points while Jamal slipped to eighth place with 12 points.
