Mohammedan Sporting Club earned a hard fought 1-0 win against Chittagong Abahani in their Bangladesh Premier League match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Saturday.
After their humiliating 3-0 defeat to Sheikh Jamal in the previous game, the black-and-white outfit returned to winning ways against a side who are now at the bottom of the league table.
With the win, Mohammedan moved up to third place from fourth in the league table with 26 points from 15 matches while Ctg Abahani remained at the basement with eight points from the same number of matches.
Mohammedan skipper Zahid Hasan Ameli scored the all-important goal from the penalty spot in the 43rd minute.
They would have take the lead in the third minute, but their Cameroonian defender Baybeck saw his header from an Emon Babu cross hit the side bar.
Then in the 15th minute, a superb flick from Ameli freed Burkina Faso midfielder Zongo on the right-hand side of the box but his final shot missed the target by a whisker.
Chittagong Abahani midfielder Ismail Zahed missed a sitter in the 25th minute when his header from a cross from Mashuk Mia went wide.
Ameli scored his seventh goal of the league after a four-match drought to put Mohammedan ahead just two minutes before the interval.
The national team forward was brought down inside the box by Chittagong Abahani goalkeeper Nahiduddin to earn a penalty kick.
But he hit the ball straight at the Ctg Abahani keeper only to score from the rebound.
