Ruling Awami League’s presidium member, Mohammad Nasim, reiterated that the next general election will be held under the supervision of an interim government, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will be the chief of that government. “No election will be held under a spineless government. The next general election must be held under an interim government formed by elected representatives, and Sheikh Hasina will be the head of that government,” Nasim said, while addressing a discussion meeting in the city on Friday.
Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote had organised the discussion on “Election under an interim government: Anti-state activities of BNP-Jamaat alliance”, at the Public Library auditorium in Dhaka.
Earlier, on May 19, Awami League general secretary and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives minister Syed Ashraful Islam said the head of the poll-time government, to oversee the next general election, will be finalised through talks.
He also said that a dialogue with the opposition can only be held in Parliament. No talks will be held outside Parliament, and such a dialogue must not have any precondition, he added.
Referring to the BNP’s countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal for Sunday, Nasim, also the former home minister, alleged that the opposition’s dialogue offer is an eyewash. The opposition has already proved that it doesn’t want talks, and that’s why it called Sunday’s hartal.
Referring to the report of Amnesty International on Bangladesh, the AL leader said the AI report was not neutral, as it did not mention the incidents of killing police personnel, and BNP-Jamaat-Hefazat’s anarchy in the capital, on May 5. In its Annual Report 2012, released on Wednesday, London-based Amnesty International (AI) said there were some 30 extrajudicial killings and 10 forced disappearances in Bangladesh, in 2012.
