Hilsa goes out of reach in city kitchen market
Price of Hilsa went out of reach for the middle class and low income people on Friday in the city’s kitchen markets just a day before the biggest Bangali festival –Pahela Baishakh.
A one-kg Hilsa was sold for Tk 2000-2500 at Palassey and New Market kitchen markets on Friday which was sold for Tk 800 to 1,000 a week ago.
Fish sellers said that wholesalers have increased the Hilsa price before Pahela Baishakh in the country.
Abu, a fish seller of Palassey kitchen market, said, “I bought a hali (four pieces) of medium sized Hilsa at Tk 5000 from the wholesalers.”
The selling of Hilsa is good demand of people is very high for the biggest Bangali festival ‘Pahela Baishakh’, he said.
Atiq Ahmed, a consumer came to the market, said, “Price of Hilsa remained costlier for low income and middle class people in the city. The upper class people are buying Hilsa at costlier price from the markets.” “Fish sellers are demanding different prices of Hilsa for the ahead of Pahela Baishakh. I bought a Jatka at Tk 500 in the kitchen market,” he said.
The prices of vegetables, potato and meat have also increased in the city kitchen markets on Friday compared to the last week’s prices.
Prices of all kinds of vegetables have also increased by Tk 10 per kg on Friday in the markets. Brinjal fetched Tk 50 a kg on Friday, against Tk 40 in the previous week. Patal was being sold for Tk 50 a kg on Friday, while the price was Tk 40 per kg in the last week.
Cucumber retailed at Tk 35 per kg, against Tk 25 per kg in the last week. Green chillies were sold for Tk 50-60 per kg on Friday, unchanged from the last week’s prices.
Beef sold for Tk 300 per kg and mutton sold for Tk 450 on Friday, while it was selling at Tk 260 and Tk 400 per kg in the city’s kitchen markets.
Potato sold for Tk 20 per kg on Friday while it was sold at Tk 12-14 in the last week.
Sugar was being sold for Tk 60 per kg, without any change from last week. Price of garlic was upped to Tk 90 a kg, against the last week’s Tk 60-70.
Shopkeepers were selling loose soyabean oil for Tk 135 a kg, while it was sold at the same price in the last week. A one and a five-litre branded bottled soyabean oil were sold for Tk 131 and Tk 650 respectively on Friday.
On the other hand, a hali (four pieces) of egg was sold for Tk 36 on Friday, while it was sold for Tk34 in the last week.
Price of broiler chicken was at Tk 160 per kg unchanged from the last week price. Onion fetched Tk 22-24 a kg.
Fine variety of Nazirshail retailed for Tk 50-52 per kg on Friday, unchanged from the previous week.
In the retail markets, the finer variety of Miniket rice, which is preferred by the lower-middle class, sold for Tk 40-42 a kg, and BR-28 and BR-29 were being retailed at Tk 32-34 per kg, without any change in prices.
