Mymensingh: Awami League (AL) General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam has said all the past caretaker governments (CGs) were the governments run by intelligence agencies. In fact, he said, the military government ruled the country in the name of caretaker administration.
Ashraf, also the LGRD minister, was addressing a rally of AL activists at the local gymnasium on Friday afternoon. The people no more believe in the CG system, he claimed.
Stating that the next general election would be held under the elected government, Ashraf said, “A free, fair and neutral election is possible under the elected government and there is no need for reintroduction of caretaker government system in the country.”
He said, BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in reality does not believe in caretaker government system and so she does not attend the sessions of the parliament.
Commenting on the 15th amendment to the constitution, the AL leader said the present government did not amend the constitution late at night and the people’s consent was taken to do that. “But, he said, “ Zia and Ershad did it without people’s consent and Khaleda Zia did the same at the darkness of night.”
“The AL government respects the rule of law. That’s why the amendment was made to the constitution in line with the judgment of the Supreme Court,” he added.
However, he said the doors are still open for discussion and through this, the constitution can be strengthened further.
He felt that no economic freedom could be possible in the country without wiping out corruption from all sectors. ‘We want the country free of corruption and hunger’.
He also warned the leaders and activists of AL and its front organizations against creating any sort of rifts in the party. For a landslide victory like the last parliamentary election, the party men should be united and such a unity should continue in the greater interest of the party and the people as well, said the leader.
Presided over by Principal Motiur Rahman, MP, also the president of AL district unit, the meeting was addressed, among others, by state minister for Cultural Affairs advocate Promode Mankin, MP, state minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr. Captain (Retd) Mujibur Rahman Fakir, MP, Whip Mirza Azam, MP, AL organizing secretaries Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Dr. BM Mozammel Haque.
