Mamunul Islam struck early to give Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club a 1-0 win over Feni Soccer Club in the Bangladesh League at the Kamalapur stadium on Sunday.
After the sixth round, Sheikh Jamal’s collection is now 11 points which took them to third in the league table while Feni Soccer Club are struggling at the 11th place of the 12-team competition with three points.
Mamun scored the winner in the ninth minute tucking home Shakil Ahmed’s cross from the left flank.
Sheikh Jamal’s Sri Lankan coach Pakir Ali admitted his players did not play seriously and became relaxed after taking an early lead. ‘My players took the match as an easy one and they became more casual when they got an early lead. We could have lost valuable points for this,’ said Pakir.
Feni Soccer Club came close to an equaliser but Sheikh Jamal’s goalkeeper and captain Aminul Islam saved his team when he fisted away a close-range shot from Masudul Alam Bulbul after a Kubaye Dominic cross three minutes into the second half.
This attempt created some excitement in the field as the visiting club claimed it as a goal
saying Aminul had
cleared the ball from inside the goal-line. Assistant referee also raised his flag when Aminul touched the ball but referee overlooked all of the appeals.
The Dhanmondi-based club’s substitute forward Tauhidul Alam Sabuj squandered an easy chance in the 62nd minute. He penetrated the opposition penalty zone and found only Aminul to beat but failed to keep the ball on target.
The away side’s coach Abu Yousuf regretted for the points they lost at the end. ‘Sheikh Jamal could not play well today (Sunday). It was a good chance for us to earn all three points from this match. We could not do that because our
players thought they cannot score against such a big team. We have to come out of this idea.’ Feni Soccer Club coach said to the media,
