Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club reclaimed their top spot and Sheikh Russell KC lost the chance to join the league leaders after their contrasting results against Muktijoddha Sangsad KC and Mohammedan SC respectively in the Grameenphone Bangladesh Premier League on Saturday.
Jamal registered a comfortable 2-0 win over Muktijoddha while Russell suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Mohammedan.
After the day’s matches, Jamal moved into top of the table with 25 points from 11 games, while Russell slipped to third place with 22 points from 10 games.
Mohammedan and Muktijoddha are in fourth and fifth places respectively after playing 11 matches each. Mohammedan have gathered 16 points while Muktijoddha are stranded on 15 points.
In the first game of the day at the Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni Stadium in Gopalganj, hosts Muktijoddha were unable to take any home advantage against their visitors as Jamal took the lead in the 27th minute through their Nigerian striker Imanual Ariawachukuu. Sunday Chizoba doubled the lead with his sixth goal of the season just a minute later.
The defeat continued Muktijoddha’s dismal run in the competition as their winless streak stretched to four matches.
With this victory, Sheikh Jamal have done the double over Muktijoddha, after winning the corresponding first-leg fixture 1-0.
Meanwhile at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, defender Topu Barman scored the all-important goal in the 54th minute to present Mohammedan with only their fifth win of the season. Topu hit the back of the net with a fierce right-footer from the edge of the box, after Russell’s back-four failed to clear a Maruf Ahmed free-kick.
This was Mohammedan’s second win in two matches against Sheikh Russell this term after thumping their rivals 3-1 earlier in the season.
