JCD central committee named

New guards overaged, mired in controversies
A 201-member central committee of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, backed by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was announced with Abdul Kader Bhuiyan Jewel and Habibur Rashid Habib, are in or close to their forties, as president and general secretary.
Some of the leaders said that Kader and Habibur had their past mired in controversies.
The BNP chairperson, Khaleda Zia, approved the committee on Monday night and a release issued announcing the new committee and abolishing the earlier committee.
Bazlul Karim Chowdhury Abed was made senior vice-president, SM Obaidul Huq Nasir joint secretary and Rajib Ahsan organising secretary.
Names of other office bearers would be announced soon, the release said.
The new committees of the Chhatra Dal units of Dhaka University, Jagannath University and Dhaka city north and Dhaka city south were also announced dissolving the earlier committees.
The new Chhatra Dal president Kader and the new joint secretary Obaidul Huq Nasir jointly approved the new committees of the four units.
Many JCD leaders and activists said that they were not happy about the people in the positions of the central committee as they wanted to see young faces at the helm of the organisation.
JCD leaders said that Kader had enrolled in Dhaka University in the 1987–88 academic session but they could not say what he studied there. He is aged about 42 and is not married, sources in the organisation said.
He was organising secretary of the organisation’s central committee that preceded the one that has just been dissolved.
Kader used to lead a group within the organisation and was involved in an incident of vandalism in front of the BNP’s central office on July 21, 2011 and burnt banners containing portraits of the then JCD president Sultan Salahuddin Tuku and general secretary Amirul Islam Alim.
Kader and his people also ransacked the JCD office housed in the same building. They had a heated exchange with the acting BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as he tried to calm them.
The next day, the BNP’s office assistant Daliluddin filed a case with the Paltan police against Kader and his people.
Kader had also been suspended from the central committee for about two months after the incident. The case was withdrawn in June 2012.
The new general secretary Habibur was a student of Jagannath University, JCD leaders said. Habib is about 41 years old and married, they said adding he also has a daughter and a son who are students of secondary schools.
Habibur was convener the Dhaka city south unit and vice-president of the just dissolved central committee.
A mid-level JCD leader told New Age that they were frustrated about the new committee.
He said they had hoped that the BNP chairperson would make a good decision.
Mirza Fakhrul, however, welcomed the new JCD committee. Talking with reporters at Square Hospitals on Tuesday, Fakhrul hoped that the new committee would play an important role in the current anti-government movement.
He also hoped that the committee would be able to create a positive impact on students in practising healthy politics.
Fakhrul went to the hospital to see an injured party leader.
A 151-member committee of the organisation’s Dhaka University unit was set up with Mohidul Hasan Hiru as president and Masud Khan Pervez as general secretary was formed.
Mohidul, A former AL-backed Chhatra League leader, is alleged to have been involved in an armed attack on a JCD procession brought out to protest at Sheikh Hasina’s presence on the university campus on February 2, 2001, leaders of both the Chhatra League and Chhatra Dal said.
He had been joint secretary of the Muhsin Hall unit Chhatra League before he joined Chhatra Dal when the BNP came to power.
Masud, who belonged to a JCD faction that worked against Sultan Salauddin Tuku, the immediate-past president of the organisation, was also involved in an attack on Sultan in the university mall in 2010.
The new senior vice-president Sadiul Kabir Nirob was enrolled in the university in the 1998–99 session while the first joint secretary Shah Nasiruddin Rummon is no longer a student of the university.
The organising secretary Minhazul Islam Minhaz, who was enrolled in the university in the 2000–01 session, was allegedly involved with Islami Chhatra Shibir.
A release, signed by Kader and Obaidul, named only five of the 151 positions of the university unit committee.
A 151-member committee of the Jagannath University unit Chhatra Dal was announced with Faisal Ahmed Sakal as president and Omar Faruq Munna as general secretary.
Rajib Rahman was made senior vice-president, Khandaker Al Ashraf Mamun joint secretary and ABM Mohsin Biswas organising secretary. Others on the committee will be named later.
A 151-member committee of the Dhaka north unit Chhatra Dal was announced with Abul Mansur Khan Dipok as president and Humayun Kabir Rawshan as general secretary.
Sharif Uddin Jewel was made senior vice-president, Kamal Hossain joint secretary and Mizanur Rahman Raj organising secretary. Others on the committee will be announced soon.
A 151-member Dhaka city south unit Chhatra Dal was announced with Ishaq Sarker as president and Khandaker Enamul Huq as general secretary.
Mirza Aslam Ali was made senior vice-president, Zahiruddin Tuhin joint secretary and Kamruzzman Tipu organising secretary. Others on the committee will be announced soon, the release said.
