A parliamentary body probing violence on the Dhaka University campus during the last caretaker government on Tuesday asked the then chief adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed and former army chief Moeen U Ahmed to appear before it.
On behalf of the parliamentary body, the parliament secretariat sent two separate letters asking them to appear before the committee on April 18 at the parliament building.
“The parliament secretariat sent one letter to cabinet division and another to armed forces division to handover the letters to Fakhruddin Ahmed and Moeen U Ahmed respectively,” Rashed Khan Menon, chief of the probe committee told this correspondent.
Menon, also president of Workers Party added that the letters were sent to cabinet division and armed forces division, as the committee could not trace whereabouts of the former chief adviser and army chief.
The four-member sub-committee, formed by the parliamentary standing committee on education ministry, at a meeting on February 27, this year decided to ask Fakhruddin Ahmed, and Moeen U Ahmed to appear before it to hear their versions on the violence.
The sub-committee was formed in August last year to probe law-enforcement agencies’ action against students and teachers during the student unrest in August 2007.
On August 20, 2007, a violent student protest broke out on the Dhaka University campus over a brawl between an army man and a student at a football match on the university playground.
Later, the protest spread to other educational institutions in the capital and elsewhere in the country that continued for several days resulting in the imposition of a curfew and shutdown of educational institutions in all major cities.
