Mohammedan Sporting Club came from behind to secure a point with a 1-1 draw against Brothers Union in their first match of the return leg in the Bangladesh Premier League on Friday.
Brothers’ Nigerian forward Victor Anthony put his team ahead in the start of the second half only to see Mohammedan’s young midfielder Mohammad Rony equalising within
15 minutes at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Both teams squandered some good scoring chances and after an intense first-half Anthony finally broke the deadlock in the 56th minute with a low long range shot.
Mohammedan, who registered a bunch of new players in the mid-season transfer window, however, took only 15 minutes to get back in the game as Brothers goalkeeper Uttam
Barua fisted away a Rajani Kanta Barman header on target to see Rony netting the rebounder with a comfortable header.
The scenario could have been different had the referee not ruled out a goal scored by Brothers’ Kingsley Chigozie in the 31st minute. Kingsley headed in from a corner,
but the referee blew the whistle for a foul on opponent midfielder Rajani who also jumped for the ball.
Mohammedan was also unfortunate in the 85th minute as a close shot on target by their Beninese striker Oladikpikpo Okalawon came off the left side bar.
Despite a lot of missed chances Mohammedan coach Emeka Ezeugo claimed this match as the best match they have played in this league and promised the supporters of some
better games ahead.
‘The new foreigners are excellent. They have strengthened the team a lot. This is the best match we played in this league and some better show is waiting ahead,’ said
Emeka.
Brothers are placed fifth in the league table with 15 points from 12 appearances while Mohammedan are at sixth position having 14 points in their tally.
