Wahed Ahmed scored a brace as Mohammedan Sporting Club continued their impressive run in the Bangladesh Premier League, edging past Brothers Union 2-1 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Thursday. Earlier in the opening fixture of the day, Sheikh Russell KC held Abahani Limited to a goalless draw, dealing a major blow to their quest for regaining the tile.
Russell played most of the match with 10 men after Pascal Millien was given a red card for elbowing Abahani defender Mofazzel Hossain Saikat in the 18th minute.
Abahani failed to take the advantage, wasting two valuable points which pushed them further behind leaders Sheikh Jamal. Abahani trail them by eight points now with 33 points from 17 matches.
Defending champions Russell earned 17 points from 14 matches, which included a continued winless streak of four matches.
The match was suspended for eight minutes after Pascal was given the red card as Russell vehemently protested the decision of referee Tayeb Hassan.
In the second match, Wahed put Mohammedan ahead in the 15th minute as the local forward sent the ball into the net by placing on a free-kick of Nigerian Damien Chigozi
Rubel Miah restored the margin with a solo effort in the 52nd minute, snatching the ball away from Hemantha Vincent as he dribbled past three defenders to enter the box and slot the ball past Mohammedan goalkeeper.
Wahed sealed the victory for Mohammedan in the 71st minute by scoring his second goal of the match and sixth in the last eight matches, a receiving a long ball from Tapu Barman.
Thanks to the win Mohammedan consolidated their third place in the table raising their tally to 29 points from 16 matches.
Brothers remained in fourth place with 26 points from 17 matches.
