All the big guns except Brothers Union started their Citycell Bangladesh League second phase campaign with facile four-goal wins at different venues across the country on Monday. Brothers Union suffered a 3-1 defeat against a rejuvenated Muktijoddha at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Defending champions and table toppers Dhaka Abahani defeated Beanibazar 4-0 at the Sylhet stadium with their Moroccan forward Sheriff Deen Mohammed slamming a hat-trick, Dhaka Mohammedan thrashed Feni Soccer 4-1 at the Feni stadium and Sheikh Russell also recorded a 4-0 victory over Shuktara Jubo Sangsad at the Narayanganj stadium.
Abahani went in front in the very fourth minute when Sheriff, who was initially overlooked by the club in the second transfer window but registered him at the last moment, scored the first of his three goals. He scored the second from a penalty in the 51st minute and completed his treble on the 55 minutes. Enamul scored the fourth goal in the 76th minute.
Second-placed Mohammedan saw their young forward Abdul Baten Komol strike twice in the 15th and 63rd minutes while their Nigerian attacking duo Emeka and Bukola found the net in the 23rd and 30th minutes. Anwar was the lone scorer for Feni when he netted in the 41st minute.
Third-placed Sheikh Russell took the lead in the 25th minute through Rajan Miah and Maruf doubled the margin on 29 minutes, forward Md Rony scored the last two goals in the 38th and 81st minutes.
However, it was a horrible day for Brothers Union who found Muktijoddha’s Ugandan forward Raphael Sagno too tough to handle. Sagno, who came to Muktijoddha from Rahmatganj in the second transfer window, scored a brace in the 36th and 42nd minutes. Sagno superbly placed a Rony Islam cross at the far post for his first goal and neatly headed a Moni corner into the roof of the net for his second. Left winger Jalaluddin netted the third in the 57th minute. Brothers Union’s lone goal came from Tanmoy Hossain Toru in the 62nd minute.
Abahani remained at the top with 37 points, Mohammedan raised their tally to 33 points while Sheikh Russell earned 30 points. Muktijoddha added another three precious points to their previous 11.
