Regular fire drill in public, private buildings stressed

Participants in a roundtable on Monday called for conducting regular fire drill in all the public and private buildings as well as educational institutions to create awareness of fire.
They made the call at the roundtable titled ‘Fire Incidents at Multi-storied buildings: related thoughts’ at the National Press Club in Dhaka.
Paribesh Bachhao Andolan and Work for a Better Bangladesh Trust jointly organised the discussion.
The speakers also urged the authorities concerned to verify the fire extinguishing system before issuance of clearance for constructing any building or structure.
They said the not only the buildings in Dhaka city are vulnerable to fire incidents, all structures from slum to commercial and residential areas are at high risk of fire.
The vice-chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Techno-logy, Professor AMM Shafiullah, attended the function as the chief guest while former president of architecture institute Prof Shamsul Wares was the special guest.
The chairman of BUET architecture department, Shahida Rahman and the deputy director of Fire Service and Civil Defence, Abdus Salam, among others, spoke at the programme held with PABA president Abu Naser Khan in the chair.
Professor Shafiullah said regular fire drill is very essential to tackle any fire incidents.
Moreover, every building must have its own fire fighting facilities, he said addingmany problems could be solved if common people were given training in fire fighting system.
The roundtable gave a number of recommendations to reduce the fire risks in the city.
The recommendations include giving approval to construction of buildings under a coordinated policy, keeping adequate open space around a building, keeping provision of ponds in the city, normal traffic system, in-house fire extinguishing system in every building and maintaining quality of building materials.
