Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad has said the next general election will be held under a system “similar” to caretaker government and his party will participate in it.
Ershad, whose party is one of the coalition partners of the Awami League-led grand alliance government, was talking to journalists at his Palli Nibash residence in the city in the after-noon. Referring to Hefajat-e-Islam, the JP chief said: “The Islamist organization is neither a terrorist nor militant organization, but the government is obstructing their programme.”
The ex-president demanded the formation of a high-powered committee for unearthing casualties at Shapla Chattar in the capital during crackdown on Hefajat activists.
“The government allowed the Ganajagaran Mancha youths to continue their programme at Shahbagh for the last three months, but it did not tolerate the Hefajat’s programme for a day,” said Ershad.
Ershad alleged that law enforcers barred and tortured the leaders and workers of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh (HIB) to hold their programme peacefully at Shapla Chattar on May 5.
About the Rana Plaza collapse in Savar, Ershad alleged that the government is trying to protect its owner Sohel Rana.
He demanded that those responsible for the tragic incident be held accountable for their actions.
