The communications minister, Obaidul Quader, on Thursday urged officials of the two city corporations of Dhaka to repair the city roads and immediately complete
Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover to ease people’s sufferings.
‘I am not responsible for city corporations’ roads. But as a minister, when I see the sufferings of people, I can be a little irritated,’ he said at the second meeting of the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority’s executive council.
The meeting held at the Dhaka South City Corporation’s head office at Nagar Bhaban.
The minister said that people in the adjacent areas of the Jatrabari flyover needed about two and a half hours to cross the road stretch on which the flyover is being constructed.
Tongi-Kanchan-Madanpur, Tongi-Ghorashal-Pachdona and Postogola-Pagla-Narayanganj roads would be ready during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr for the commuters of the Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Sylhet route, he said.
He also said the proposal for appointing consultant to form detail design and construct metro rail would be sent to the ministerial committee on purchase and the process would be completed within this month.
The process to appoint consultants for the final design of Bus Rapid Transit was in the last stage, the minister said, hoping that the transit’s foundation would be laid in July.
The Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Federation general secretary, Osman Ali, urged the government to hold the meeting of regional transport committee to resolve different problems like public transport’s crisis and management of traffic signals.
The programme was attended, among others, by roads and highways department secretary MAN Siddique, railways ministry secretary Abul Kalam Azad, bridges division secretary and parliament member Benjir Ahmed, Asaduzzaman Khan and Nurul Mazid Mahmud Humayun, Bangladesh Railway director general Mohammad Abu Taher, DTCA executive director Aftabuddin Talukder, Bangladesh Police’s additional inspector general Mili Biswas, and DSCC administrator Ashoke Madhab Roy.
