Poor defending and sloppy goalkeeping cost Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club at least one point in their AFC Cup campaign when they suffered a 3-4 defeat to Selangor FA of Malaysia at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Tuesday. Selangor twice came from behind to seal their first win in the competition as Jamal defender Kesto Kumar and goalkeeper Shahidul Alam Sohel ruined their attacking trio’s brilliant efforts by gifting the visitors’ last two goals.
Gambian midfielder Landing Darboe was the star of the show with a swashbuckling performance but due to Sohel and Kesto’s poor displays Jamal’s hopes of qualifying in the round of 16 was all but over as they have lost all of their three games so far.
Landing gave the home side a deserved lead in the 28th minute with a 30-yard out screamer, following a fine build-up involving Sohel Rana and Yeamin Ahmed Munna, giving no chance to diving Selangor goalkeeper Norazlan Bin Razali.
Liberian forward Patrick Ronaldinho levelled the margin for the Malaysian outfit in the 39th minute, heading home in a cross of Argentine forward Mauro Olivi.
Selangor went ahead eight minutes after the resumption with Gopinathan tapping the ball home following a low cross of Patrick.
Nigerian striker Emeka Darlington scored an equaliser in the 65th minute after another brilliant effort from Landing when his solo effort was punched away by Selangor keeper and the Gambian headed on the rebound into goalmouth before Emeka headed that into the net.
Wedson put Jamal ahead just a minute later when Landing provided a neat through to him and he slotted that home past Selangor keeper Norazlan.
Jamal, however, again lost the lead in the 70th minute when Olivi netted his first goal of the day placing past Sohel following a cutback of Patrick after a poor defending from Kesto.
Selangor had the last laugh in the 83rd minute when a placing from Olivi slipped between the hands of an advancing Sohel into back of the net.
With their third consecutive defeat Jamal remained at the bottom of the table without a single point while Selangor’s first victory provided them with four points from three matches.
