Parepare: Rescuers battled rocky seas on Monday as they searched for nearly 250 people missing and feared dead after a ferry capsized off Indonesia’s Sulawesi island.
About 250 passengers and 17 crew were believed to have been aboard the 700-ton Teratai Prima when it sank on Sunday morning.
At least 22 people, including four crew members, were rescued from the sea by fishermen on Sunday before the military launched an operation at daybreak Monday.
Officials in the port town of Majene, the closest city to where the ship is thought to have sunk, said it is unlikely anyone would have survived.
“There are already two rescue teams searching for survivors, but bad weather and low tides have forced additional rescue teams to delay their departures,” said Jesaja Sarita, head of the Marjene port.
