Dhaka University teacher Rumana Monzur, who flew to Canada for better treatment after she had been injured in the eyes allegedly by her husband Hasan Syeed on June 5, is now learning Braille to complete her studies in Vancouver, her family said.
Assistant professor of international relations in Dhaka University, Rumana, 33, also a student of the University of British Columbian, had undergone four surgeries in UBC Hospital in Vancouver but physicians said that she had lost her sight permanently, Rumana’s cousin Rashed Maqsood told New Age.
‘She is learning Braille to complete her studies. She is also learning the use of Braille on computer,’ he said.
The UBC, meanwhile, expected that Rumana would be able to complete her master’s degree although it might just take a little longer, Maqsood said, adding that she would return to Dhaka after Eid-ul-Fitr.
Rumana was attacked by her husband when she visited Bangladesh during a break from studies for a master’s degree in political science.
Her father retired major Monzur Hussain filed a case with the Dhanmondi police.
‘The court will record her statement soon after her arrival,’ the investigation officer of the case, Bahauddin Faruqui, told New Age as he was asked about delay in the submission of the charge sheet.
Hasan, 38, a drop-out from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, is now in jail after being interrogated for six days by the Detective Branch in four phases, the police said.
‘Our hearts go out to Rumana,’ said Louise Nasmith, vice-president of students.
Till July, the University of British Columbia has received more than $61,000 in gifts toward its goal of raising $70,000 to cover health needs, living expenses and costs related to Rumana completing her studies, the university said in July.
