She created a buzz in her schooldays winning the First Prize for Patriotic Songs in the Reality Show—‘Notun Kuri’ in 1977. Under the proper guidance from her father, renowned singer Mahmudun Nabi, she developed as a quality playback contemporary singer.
The melodious singer made a brilliant beginning her professional musical career in 1981 with the song Jonmo theke jolchhi maago in the film, ‘Jonmo Theke Jolchi’ in 1981, even before passing the school. And for her debut playback Samina Chowdhury won the Bachsas, a forum of cine-journalists, award.
Even in time of draught in the country’s film industry Samina Chowdhury has presented some unique playbacks such as Ekbar jodi keo bhalobashto, Amar majhe nei ekhon ami, Hou jodi ei neel akash and Amar buker moddhey khane. She won the National Film Award in the Best Female Singer category in 2006.
In her long and diverse music career of three decades Samina Chowdhury has also presented some wonderful melodious songs such as Oi jhinuk phota sagorbelai amar icche kore, Kobita porar prohor esechhe rater nirjoney, Somoy jeno kate na and Phul phote phul jhore.
In a recent interview with New Age, Samina Chowdhury said that she was busy with two solo albums. ‘Both of the albums feature contemporary songs. Songs of the album Pushpabrishti are written and composed by Md. Abdul Bari. These songs have the flavour of the romantic songs of the golden yesteryears in terms of lyrics, tune and singing style, even though using modern instruments’ she said.
The second album titled ‘Phul Phote Phul Jhore Volume 2’—is a compilation of her popular contemporary songs. ‘I have not finalised the songs yet. But the songs will be remade with modern instruments,’ Samina said.
She is bringing such albums considering the contemporary time as the period of ‘revival of modern song’, which for years has been going through bad days due to the over commercialisation of everybody involved with the music industry.
‘A bunch of new talents are here who will bring significant development in the industry. I welcome the initiatives taken by the TV channels to find out talented singers from all across the country. We have really found some promising singers from these platforms,’ she optimistic Samina Chowdhury, who also emerged through a TV reality show in the late 1970s.
However, she believes the channels should promote the new singers more even after the termination of their contracts for the sake of their establishment.
Samina Chowdhury also feels that change in the playback industry. ‘Now the trend of the film industry is different. Though, good songs are available in the current market. This change will bring out something good I believe,’ said the optimistic singer.
‘But, I work on and off for the films these days as I’m busy with solo albums, live shows and others. But if I get songs of my taste I try to work for playbacks,’ she adds.
