Former Bangladesh national team midfielder Enamul Haque Sharif announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 32 due to a knee injury.
Sharif, who led Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in the ongoing season,
informed his decision to the reporters on Thursday.‘I incurred a knee injury during the middle of the league campaign and after that I tried hard to recover. I am that kind of a player who continued to play the game by hiding the injury. I told the club officials about my retirement and I wish to play my last game in the forthcoming Super Cup,’ Sharif said.
Sharif began his 13-year long career in 2000 with Victoria Sporting Club in the First Division League. He then featured in the top flight for the first time with Victoria as they gained promotion in 2002. Then he joined Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra for a season which was followed by a move to Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited where he played for seven consecutive years for the Black and White outfit.
Sharif was the skipper of the Motijheel-based side in 2011 after which he joined Sheikh Jamal. Sharif
captained the Dhanmondi-based football powerhouse in the ongoing season.
Sharif received a call-up to the Bangladesh
Under 19 national team in 2003. He also played for the national team from 2006 to 2010.
‘I spent seven years with Mohammedan and the club presented me with
the opportunity to prove myself but my current club [Jamal] duly honoured me and I want to hang up my
boots wearing the yellow-green jersey for the final time,’ he said.
