Today is the 137th birth anniversary of legendary national leader Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Haque.
Different political and socio-cultural organisations will pay tribute by placing wreaths at his grave while they will also organise several programmes in his memorial.
On the occasion, a special doa and milad mahfil will be held today at the residence of his grand son AK Faiyazul Haque Razu at Banani in the capital, said a press release yesterday.
However, Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque was born to an agricultural peasant’s family on October 26 in 1873 at Saturia in Jhalokati district. The veteran leader died on Friday 27 April 1962 at his residence in Dhaka.
Sher-e-Bangla’s greatest contribution was the formation of Rin Salishi (Debt Review) Board that helped numerous peasants reclaim lands lost from unpaid debts. He also founded several educational and technical institutions for the Bengali Muslims.
Abul Kashem Fazlul Haque was a well-known Bengali statesman in the first half of the 20th century. He held different political posts including those of General Secretary of Indian National Congress, Education Minister, the first Muslim Mayor of Calcutta, Chief Minister of undivided Bengal and East Pakistan, Home Minister of Pakistan, Governor of East Pakistan, Food and Agriculture Minister of Pakistan.
