Spain are world champions, having won the Women’s World Cup 1-0 against England in Sydney, Australia.
Thirteen years on from the men’s victory in South Africa, an Olga Carmona strike proved enough to win the match against the European champions in front of 75,784 spectators.
Her goal came in the 29th minute, firing a precise strike in the far corner of the England goal following a counter attack.
It was a deserved lead for a Spain side that started well and that could have gone in to the break with an even larger lead.
Into the second half, La Roja had an excellent opportunity to double their advantage when VAR showed that Keira Walsh handled the ball in her own area. But, Jenni Hermoso’s 70th minute penalty was saved by Mary Earps.
That miss ultimately didn’t matter, as a supreme defensive effort from Spain led to a clean sheet.
There were 13 minutes of added time, but Spain kept attacking and keeping the ball up the other end, before Cata Coll collected a late English corner to confirm the victory, meaning the Spanish women’s national team are world champions for the first time, at just their third World Cup appearance.
