Traffic movement in many of the city’s areas — including Tejgaon, Moghbazar, Shahbagh, Mirpur Road, Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue and Rokeya Sarani — came more or less to a standstill because of the fire at Bashundhara City Tower.
Authorities stopped traffic movement on the roads approaching Bashundhara on Panthapath to facilitate movement of fire-service vehicles as well as ensure the public’s safety in the afternoon.
Thousands of curious onlookers clogged the Panthapath, Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue and Green Road, making vehicular movement impossible. Hundreds of people streamed to the scene from all across the city.
Traffic police halted vehicular movement on Panthapath at the Tejgaon Road end as well as the Kalabagan end. Traffic movement was also halted on Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue from Shahbagh to Bijoy Sarani.
A large number of vehicles got stuck on all the roads linking Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue and Panthapath as extra pressure of vehicular movement was seen on the Tongi Diversion Road from Mohakhali to Kakrail.
Traffic also clogged the Maulana Bhashani Road from Matsya Bhaban to Elephant Road while Mirpur Road was also clogged as vehicles were diverted to it from Rokeya Sarani.
Passengers on these roads had to wait for hours because of the slow movement of vehicles till the filing of this report at 7:00pm.
