Traffic through the Farmgate intersection remained suspended for about three hours causing enormous sufferings to the commuters as the students of
Dhaka University and Tejgaon College locked in a clash on Sunday.
Dhaka University students also vandalised at Tejgaon College.The university students said at least 10 of them were injured in the clash.
The clash caused huge traffic congestions in different areas including Karwanbazar, Shahbagh, Manik Mia Avenue, Bijoy Sarani and Press Club areas. Many ambulances were also seen in the long queues in those areas.
Hundreds of commuters were seen to walk due to huge tailbacks.
Witnesses said that the clash began at 3:45pm, when some students of the college vandalised a double-decker bus Choitali of the university carrying the university students in front of the college in Indira Road area of Farmgate in the city.
The university students, who were on the bus, said that about 15-20 students armed with sticks attacked the bus.
They alleged that the police, who were on the spot, took no action, although the college students attacked the bus in their presence injuring at least 10 of them.
The university students blocked the Farmgate intersection instantly in protest against the attack, the witnesses said.
As the news of the attack spreads on the university campus, several hundred university students joined their protesting fellows at Farmgate and vandalised Tejgaon College and surroundings prompting the college students to attack them again.
The students of Tejgaon College alleged that the university bus was attacked as the university students beat up a staff of Hanif Paribahan ticket counter in front of the college at noon and also attacked a student of Tejgaon College as he protested against the beating.
The Hanif Paribahan ticket counter, was, however, found closed and nearby vendors said that the ticket counter was not opened on Sunday.
Tejgaon police inspector Moshiur Rahman Khandaker told New Age that the clash erupted following a minor incident.
A case was filed with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station against 15-20 students of Tejgaon College naming one.
