A woman here succmbed to her burn injuries yesterday after she set herself on fire to commit suicide on Thursday.
Deceased Hasina Begum, 35, was the wife of Idu Mia of Munshipara under sadar upazila in the district.
While undergoing treatment at the hospital, Hasina told The Daily Star Thursday night that she torched herself failing to bear the slander of the locals but did not mention any name.
She, however, remained silent when asked over what the locals maligned her. She also said she had no feud with Idu Mia, her husband.
Hasina had been working as a cook at the officer’s mess at Thakurgaon Police Station for last two months.
Locals said Hasina poured kerosene on her body and torched herself on Thursday around 7:30pm on the Thakurgaon municipality auditorium premises.
Hearing her scream and seeing the blaze, people rushed to the scene and took her to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital.
She was later brought to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital where she died around 8:00am yesterday.
Shah Alam, a shopkeeper in the area, said Hasina and her husband were talking in front of a food shop in the evening. A little later, he heard a woman screaming and saw the flame.
Idu Mia said Hasina told him that some locals were maligning her, and he assured her of discussing the issue when they go home.
Hasian, however, torched herself before that could happen.
On information, Additional Superintendent of Police Masum Billah and Officer-in-charge of Thakurgaon Police Station Gopal Chakrabarti went to the hospital and took Hasina’s statement.
In her statement, Hasina held the locals responsible for her death, the OC said, adding, investigation is on to unearth the cause of her committing suicide.
