The Queen’s funeral will take place at Westminster Abbey at 11.00am on Monday, September 19, royal aides confirmed yesterday.

Before that her body will be lying in state for four days at Westminster Hall, where thousands of people will have the chance to pay their respects. The Earl Marshal, the Duke of Norfolk, outlined plans for the next few days.

He said: “Presently, The Queen lies in the Ballroom at Balmoral Castle. Tomorrow, Her Majesty’s Coffin will be taken by road to the Palace of Holyroodhouse at 10am, arriving in Edinburgh at 4pm.

“On Monday, it will be taken from the Palace of Holyroodhouse at 2.35pm in procession to St Giles’s Cathedral where it will lie at rest until Tuesday, September 13 when it will travel by air to London, arriving at 8pm.

“On Wednesday, September 14 at 2.22pm the Coffin will be moved from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall for Lying-in-State which will end on the morning of the State Funeral.

“On Monday, September 19 at 10.44am, the Coffin will be taken in Procession from the Palace of Westminster to Westminster Abbey where the State Funeral Service will take place.

“Following the State Funeral, the Coffin will be taken again in Procession from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch.

“From Wellington Arch, the Coffin will travel to Windsor.

“Once in Windsor, the Hearse will travel in Procession to St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle via the Long Walk.

“Thereafter, a Committal Service will take place in St George’s Chapel.”

He told journalists at a Buckingham Palace briefing: “As the person with overall responsibility for delivering the funeral, let me end by saying that, together with so many colleagues from within The Royal Household, the Armed Forces, the Police, and other institutions of Church and State, we will carry out our duty over the coming days with the heaviest of hearts.

“But also, with the firmest of resolve to ensure a fitting farewell to one of the defining figures of our times; a monarch whom we were truly privileged to have had as the Head of State of our country and the Realms, and Head of the wider Commonwealth.

“While His Majesty The King was speaking about his family, I think it applies to us all when he said in his broadcast yesterday that: ‘We owe her the most heartfelt debt.’

“I think we can, in some way, repay that debt by carrying out her last wishes in delivering Her Majesty The Queen’s Funeral.”

The Queen’s body currently rests in an oak coffin covered with the royal standard of Scotland and with a wreath of flowers laid on top in the ballroom of Balmoral Castle.

“It is a scene of quiet dignity,” a senior palace official said.

The King will continue to lead the Royal Family, the nation, the realms and the Commonwealth in mourning the Queen, Buckingham Palace said.

on Sunday, September 11, The King will meet the Commonwealth Secretary General at Buckingham Palace. The King will then host Realm High Commissioners and their spouses in the Bow Room at Buckingham Palace.

On Monday he will travel to Westminster Hall where both Houses of Parliament will meet to express their condolences at the demise of The Queen. The King will make his reply.

The King and the Queen Consort will then travel to Edinburgh by air. Their Majesties will travel first to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. There, the King will inspect the Guard of Honour.

The Ceremony of the Keys on the forecourt of the Palace of Holyroodhouse will follow.

The King will then attend a Service of Prayer and reflection for the life of the Queen at St Giles’ Cathedral, before returning to Holyrood.

At the Palace, the King will have an audience with the First Minister, followed by an audience with the Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament.

The King and The Queen Consort will then attend the Scottish Parliament to receive a Motion of Condolence. The King will make his reply.

That evening, the King will hold a Vigil with members of the Royal Family at St Giles’ Cathedral.

on Tuesday, September 13, the King and the Queen Consort will travel by air to Belfast, and then on to Hillsborough Castle. There, they will view an exhibition on the late Queen’s long association with Northern Ireland.

The King will then meet the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and party leaders and receive a message of condolence led by the Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly. The King will make his reply.

After a short reception at Hillsborough, the King and the Queen Consort will travel to St Anne’s Cathedral for a service of prayer and reflection. Before the service, His Majesty will meet leaders from all the major faiths in Northern Ireland. The King and The Queen Consort will then leave Belfast for London.

On Wednesday, September 14, the King will lead the procession behind the Gun Carriage carrying Her Majesty’s Coffin to Westminster Hall, where the Lying in State will begin.

On Friday, September 16, the King and the Queen Consort will visit Wales. Further details will be announced.
