Dhaka giants Mohammedan Sporting Club returned to the winning ways after two consecutive defeats when they beat Feni Soccer Club 1-0 in their Bangladesh Premier League match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Thursday.
Mohammedan’s Ghanaian striker Usei Morrison scored the winner in the 37th minute, their fourth win in the competition, that took them to the fourth position in the points table.
Basement side Feni Soccer Club, despite being under threat of relegation, played a positive game and attacked equally as they defended.
However, it was Mohammedan who came close to a goal first but Morrison’s shot from just inside the penalty area in the 25th minute missed the target by a whisker.
He once again squandered a scoring opportunity five minutes later when he shot wide with the opposition goalkeeper Masud Ahmed Ujjal alone in front of the post.
Finally, the Ghanaian found the back of the net in the 37th minute, tapping in a left-flank cross by his team-mate Maruf Ahmed from close range. This was the seventh goal of the competition for Morrison that made him the league’s highest scorer.
After going a goal down the point hungry Feni Soccer Club went all out in search of an equaliser and gave their opponents a late scare, although they failed to capitalize on any of the several chances they created.
The Feni-based side had their best chance in the 77th minute when midfielder Touhidul Islam beat an advancing Mohammedan goalkeeper Titumir Chowdhury Titu, chipping the ball over the latter’s head only to see it fly past the left-hand side bar.
Mohammedan had started their campaign well and were at the top of the points table after their first five matches but they had a sudden dip in form after their head coach Saiful Bari Titu was absent due to illness.
After losing their fifth and sixth matches against Abahani Limited and Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra they found themselves in sixth place in the table, while this win improved their position a little as they are fourth now with 13 points they earned from eight matches.
Feni Soccer Club, on the other hand, are seventh in the nine-team league with three points from seven games.
