Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra moved to second position of the league with a first-half strike from their Senegalese forward Camara Sarba to sink Abahani Limited 1-0 in their Bangladesh Premier League match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Tuesday. With the all important win, Muktijoddha have now 16 points from their eight matches — just three behind the table toppers and reigning champions Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, who however have played a game less.
Abahani slipped to fourth place after their second defeat in seven games with 13 points.
Camara Sarba put Muktijoddha ahead in the 12th minute of the match when defender Mohiuddin Ibnul Siraji curved a cross from the right to unmarked Camara, who headed the ball into far post.
Camara also had a chance to double the lead when his placing shot was saved by Abahani keeper Ziaur Rahman by diving to the right.
Abahani forward Wahed Ahmed squandered an opportunity to level the margin on the cusp of half-time when midfielder Shahedul Alam Shahed sent a long ball to Wahed, who failed to put the ball past Muktijoddha keeper Titumir Chowdhury.
The four-time professional league champions were close to level the scoreline again in the 61st minute when Wahed’s header landed on the top of the net on a cross of midfielder Imon Babu.
