On September 15, the Prince of Wales and his wife Kate Middleton engaged in conversation with onlookers outside the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk. He told the mourners that seeing his late grandmother Queen Elizabeth’s coffin brought back memories of his mother Princess Diana’s funeral.
The Prince and Princess of Wales talked with throngs of mourners for nearly an hour while they observed floral tributes outside Sandringham Estate. The Queen’s coffin was followed by members of the royal family on Wednesday during the coffin procession.
Along with her grandchildren Prince William and Prince Harry, the late Queen’s children King Charles III, Princess Royal Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward marched behind the coffin.
Speaking to the mourners, Prince William said, “The walk yesterday was tough.” The Prince of Wales remarked the procession was difficult for him since it brought back memories of his mother’s funeral, according to Jane Wells, one of the mourners who met Prince William outside Sandringham Estate.
Don’t cry right now, you’ll start me, the heartbroken grandson advised another mourner who was on the verge of tears.
Prince William and Prince Harry, then 15 and 12 years old, respectively, marched behind their mother Princess Diana’s coffin on September 6, 1997, 25 years ago. They traveled from Kensington Palace, the London residence of their late mother, to Westminster Abbey.
Previously, Prince William discussed his mother’s burial in the 2017 film Diana, 7 Days. It was among the hardest things I’ve ever done, he remarked of the walk. She seemed to be almost pacing alongside us as she helped us get through it.

During his mother’s funeral, Prince William stressed that he needed to strike a balance between his obligations and his family. William, a son who tragically and unexpectedly lost his mother, said that he had to strike a balance between being a prince and “having to do my bit” and being William, a son who “just wanted to go into a room and grieve.”
Queen Elizabeth II passed away on September 8 and will be laid to rest at Westminster Abbey on September 19 in a state funeral.
