Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club defeated Arambagh Krira Sangha 2-0 in their Bangladesh Premier League match at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Sunday.
Substitute Striker Towhidul Alam Sabuj and Nigerian forward Chibuke Ibeji scored the goals late in the second half to help Jamal earn all three points from the game. With this win, Jamal kept alive their dream of winning the league trophy and they are now in second place with 28 points from 13 matches while Arambagh remained at the bottom on six points from 13 matches.
Jamal felt the absence of their Nigerian in-form striker Sunday Chizoba as they struggled to break the defence of Arambagh. Jamal’s Nigerian attacking trio of Alfred Emoefe, Augustine Chizoba and Chinuike Ibeji failed to prove their worth and were outplayed by Arambagh almost throughout the game. But Jamal managed to come back and showed their character at the last stage of the match.
On the other hand, relegation-threatened Arambagh played an outstanding game but did not manage a much-needed point. A solo effort by Arambagh right winger Khokan Das in the eighth minute saw him enter into the box. Khokan found himself in a one-on-one situation with Shakil in the Jamal goal, but his chip over the keeper was punched away for a corner.
Arambagh’s Nigerian forward Kester Akon dribbled past a defender and into the penalty area in the 32nd minute and cut the ball back to an unmarked Uzumefon Joel whose powerful shot from the middle of the box was blocked by Jamal defender Rayhan Hasan.
After three minutes Khokan Das sent a low cross to Nigerian striker Uzumefon Joel but his header went just outside the bar.
In 75th minute Jamal’s substitute forward Towhidul Alam Sabuj failed to connect a cross from Nasir Uddin from the right but in 83rd minute Sabuz did the right job. Receiving the ball from Nasir, Arup Kumar Baidya took the advantage of disjointed Arambagh defence and provided a clever cross to unmarked Sabuj who headed the ball into the near post.
In extra time Jamal launched a counter-attack when Sabuj ran down the right flank and unleashed a low cross for Nigerian forward Chibuke Ibeji to send the ball into the net past Arambagh goalie Masud Rana.
